Royal Dance Academy Dance Recital
Frequently Asked Questions
The annual recital is a memorable part of any child’s experience, offering them a chance to feel the magic that occurs while performing before an audience. It is their chance to shine!
When is the recital?
Rehearsals will be held on the Sun 22nd June, Mon 23rd, and Tues 24th of June, 2008.
Performances will be on the Wed 25th, Thurs 26th and Fri 27th of June, 2008
Please keep all of the above dates free in your diary but be aware that most students will perform on one or two nights only. We will notify you of the exact night as soon as we possibly can.
Where is the recital?
The Mandeville Auditorium at U.C.S.D. campus, La Jolla.
Is it mandatory that my child(ren) be in the recital?
No, it is not mandatory.
What happens if my child does not want to be in the recital?
Students still attend classes as they too will be learning and perfecting new steps and choreography. If there are enough students of the same age group who are not participating in the recital then we may be able to add a “non recital” class to the schedule.
What is the procedure if we want to be in the recital?
You will complete the Recital & Costume Order Form and return if with the $55 recital fee and $65 deposit per costume by December 1st, 2007. Every student will be measured and all costumes will be ordered in December. You must fill in your child’s measurement on the form incase he/she is absent when the teacher measures the class.
What if I don’t return the forms or payment by the deadline?
Unfortunately your child will not be able to participate. There will be no exceptions as in the past we have been lenient. However, this then created double the work load and organizational chaos.
What are the costs I will incur?
$55 recital fee
Costumes can range from $65 - $120 (usually professional tutus and costumes with more intricate detail for the older students are the more expensive costumes.)
Tickets cost $15
Costumes will not be distributed unless the full amount is paid.
What if I damage or lose the costume or accessories?
You will be responsible for paying for a replacement providing the company can ship in time, otherwise the student will not be able to participate.
What fees are refundable?
None. The companies do not give refunds once orders have been processed.
Does my child need to attend all classes and rehearsals?
Once the teacher starts teaching the choreography, it is crucial that all students attend classes. If a student misses more than 2 classes then the teacher has the right to exclude the student from all or part of the dance as it is not fair to the other students. It is only one week out of the whole year so please be committed.
ALL STUDENTS MUST ATTEND ALL REHEARSALS AT THE MANDEVILLE AUDITORIUM.
What about parking?
There is usually an attendant on duty otherwise you require a permit from the information booth for a small fee. Weekends are free. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the Mandeville, park, and enter the auditorium. If you are on the last minute or late your child may feel anxious and not perform to their best ability.
What performance will my child be in?
When we have the exact number of students participating, and have decided the choreography and costumes for each class we will then be able to do a running order for each night. Once we have done this we will inform you immediately, but it is best to keep the week of June 24th – 29th, 2008 available. Please plan vacations after the recital.
What is the recital ticket policy?
When tickets go on sale they will be sold on a first come first served basis at the studio. All tickets are numbered and the seating at the Mandeville is excellent. Date and time to be announced.
What if I have an outstanding balance?
Students will not be allocated tickets or allowed to participate in the recital if they have an outstanding balance.
When is June tuition due?
June tuition must be paid on or before May 1st, 2008. For the last 30 days of the season we will only accept cash payments.
Will there be a recital photograph day?
Yes, in June. Date to be announced.
Will there be a recital video /DVD?
Yes. The recital will be professionally recorded by Darrell Wright Productions.
Can I take photos or video the recital myself?
No. It is very distracting for the performers and other audience members and it interferes with the quality of the professional video. However we have no objection to you taking photographs or recording the dress rehearsal.
Am I allowed to help backstage?
Yes. We need many volunteers to help backstage. We will post a helper’s list on the notice board nearer the time. However, only two parents of the younger classes will be allowed to escort the class side-stage.
Do I get to watch the show?
Yes. All parents should get the chance to watch the show. There is also a huge screen backstage for the helpers and students to watch the show as it happens.
Can I view my child’s dance prior to the recital performance?
Yes. We will have a parent viewing week prior to the recital where everything you need to know will be discussed and you can watch your child’s dance.
Why can’t the younger children perform in their own show?
It is much more entertaining for the audience to watch a variety of age groups and abilities in the same recital. It also gives the younger children an opportunity to watch and be inspired by the older or more experienced dancers.
Can I pick my child up after his/her dance?
No. All students will remain backstage for the entire show with parent volunteers. If parents of younger children feel anxious they can volunteer to stay backstage with their child for the entire show and go around to the back of the auditorium to watch their child’s dance when they are on stage. After the dance you will go backstage and remain with your child until the Finale. We discourage audience members leaving during the show as it is rude and disrespectful to the dancers on stage and also to the rest of the audience.
Who will look after my child?
There will be some parents from your child’s class and also experienced parents of older students who volunteer each year. The younger classes will have at least 5 volunteers to assist them. The older students only require one or two helpers. The students are always very excited and they can watch the show on a huge screen back-stage. The children will be kept occupied and before they know it the show is over.
Why is the recital at night?
The recital is at night because most parents and audience members work during the day. Also a lot of students attend summer camps.
We hope the above has helped you. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to ask. The recital should be an enjoyable, rewarding and positive experience for all involved.
Thank you,
Royal Dance Academy
